Reclaimed by Nature / by Irene Mendez Cruz

« Reclaimed by nature » is a project undertook in the Kennall Vale Nature reserve (Cornwall, UK).  Cornwall used to be widely overrun by the mining industry until the 20th century, among others, to extract tin, copper and arsenic. Kennall Vale is evidence of Cornwall’s mining history as it used to be the land of the Kennall Gunpowder Company, from 1812 to 1910. Fortunately, since 1985, Kennall Vale is an acknowledged nature reserve protected by the Cornwall Wildlife Trust.

Over the years, Kennall Vale became a mystical nature reserve with its unique combination of abandoned granite buildings, dense woodland and abundant streams.  The wet and moist climate is ideal for the spread of plants and wildlife allowing nature to claim back its rightful environment !
